Sufjan Stevens to perform at Lincoln Center, New York, New York

Asthmatic Kitty Records announces the following:

Sufjan Stevens will be performing with strings, horns, and a full band in the distinctive contours of the Allen Room, a 500-capacity theater with a unique view over Columbus Circle for two performances January 14, 2006 as part of Lincoln Center’s American Songbook Series. This uncommon performance will feature new arrangements of familiar songs from Seven Swans, Michigan, and Illinois, as well as one or two new “pieces.”

Having spent the past few weeks anguishing over staff paper, etching amateur notations, channeling the muses of Charles Ives and Benjamin Britten, Sufjan is now ready to demonstrate the merits of time spent in music school (oh, many years ago!) holed up in a practice room, hunched over music theory periodicals and Barret Oboe Method textbooks. This is not rock-n-roll. Nor is it Broadway Theater. The pom poms have been put in retirement. Instead, Sufjan’s band could be wearing shirts with collars and neckties. Or even–dare we say it–street clothes. There will be violas and violins. In attendance will be wealthy New Yorkers, upper east-siders, grown men and women who can complete the Sunday Times crossword puzzle in ten minutes flat. Please join us with a look of surprise on your face. If you can’t afford the ticket prices, then please consider that surprised look in the privacy of your own home, in front of a mirror.

Information: The Allen Room is located on the 5th floor of the Time Warner Center at Broadway and 60th Street, New York City.

For locals, the box office is located in The Shops at Columbus Circle inside the Broadway at 60th Street entrance.

One-sound “soundtrack” by Dr. BLT hits top 25

Re: Black Santa: song by Phantom Tollbooth author, “Dr. BLT,” (featured as one-song “soundtrack” on PT article), hits #21 on top 50 download chart.

Black Santa, a song written and recorded by Phantom Tollbooth writer, Dr. Bruce L. Thiessen, aka Dr. BLT, featuring Michael C. made it’s debut on a top 50 download chart at mp3000.net over the holidays, nearly 15 years after the song was originally recorded. The song peaked as high as #21 a few days before Christmas of ‘05, raising it above John Lennon’s perennial Christmas classic, And So This Is Christmas, and just one notch below the latest tune from Eminem, When I’m Gone, which has since climbed into the top ten on that same chart. Black Santa, aka The Black Santa Song, then dropped off that chart two days after Christmas Day. The song is based upon a humorous, fictional conversation between an African-American man applying for a job as Santa Claus, and a Caucasian department store manager (played/rapped by Dr. BLT in the song), who is anxiously trying to find another place in the store for this man.

Black Santa was first introduced to the public via this Phantom Tollbooth article:

http://www.tollbooth.org/2004/features/nkc.html

Dr. BLT is not sure how the song ended up as a download at www.mp3000.net because he did not personally send it to that site, a site that posts and tracks the progress of thousands of mp3 songs. Yet, while he is grateful that they have been instrumental in making the song a hit, he is against some of the sexually suggestive photos displayed there to lure visitors to a dating service that is one of the sponsors of the site. So, instead of referring interested parties to mp3000.net, the rock doc suggests accessing the song via this link:

(Or via the Phantom Tollbooth article linked above)

Dr. BLT realizes that the song appeared on a most popular downloads site and not in Billboard, but he has high hopes of the song eventually becoming at least an underground Christmas classic.

Mike Peters re-diagnosed with cancer

Spare a prayer for Mike Peters!

This is an edited message. See the whole message at thealarm.com site:

A Personal Message From Mike Peters

Hello my friends,

I hope you are all enjoying the best of times as the holiday season
approaches.

I have some very difficult news to share with you. Last Thursday on
the 8th December, I was diagnosed as having cancer. I have been told
by my consultant, Dr. E that I have Chronic Lymphocytic Leukemia
(CLL). The good news is that although my illness is not curable, it
is treatable and, in the words of Dr. E, it is a disease I will
probably die with, rather than of.

Obviously, this has come as a massive shock to me and my family,
especially as it is almost ten years to the day that I was
originally diagnosed with cancer (Non Hodgkins Lymphoma). In 1995,
no one really knew what had happened to me and how I had come to
be ‘cured’. Now, with the breaking of the DNA code and the huge
leaps in ‘understanding cancer’, that have happened since, I now
know far more about my situation. Ten years ago, it seems that my
own immune system supressed the cancer and I was able to go
into ‘remission’ for ten years. (A ‘good deal’, according to Dr. E!).

Love and life,

Mike Peters
