The Phantom Tollbooth’s News

30th June 2006

No band can love you half as much as Ping

“No band can love you half as much as Ping.” (TM) So begins Ping’s announcement of its summer shows.

Founder Jeff Elbel says of their Wednesday, July 5 appearce at Cornerstone Festival:

“It will be fun. It will be interesting. It will be perhaps slightly alarming. There will be two worldwide firsts on exhibit, at least one of which may prove to be rather ill-advised, but we’re doing it anyhow! Plus, last year we gave away the new album to lots of people and hoped it would pay off. Other bands, as formidable and awesome as they are, did they ever do that? No. They don’t love their audience nearly as much, by half.”

Album Description:

The Eleventh Hour Storybook contains ten tracks of fully amped rock and roll storytelling, with an emphasis on good fun and embracing the challenges of real life. The album is suitable to rock all ages, from hip kids to veterans alike. The whimsical “Bark Along with Cody” and “Muffin in the Oven” have been featured on The Dr. Demento Show. Ace guitarists Andrew Carter (Andrewesley) and John Bretzlaff cut loose on a Stonesy examination of married life called “Goodnight, Rabbit.” Hammond B3 maestro Phil Madeira (Buddy Miller, Emmylou Harris) guests on several cuts, including the Subterranean Homesick pop of “You Little Victim” and a freewheeling tale of exhilarating chaos called “Engine of Destruction.” Mastering performed by Dan Stout (Wilco, etc.).

(Cornerstone Farm, Illinois)

In a prepared statement, Cornerstone Festival Executive Director John Herrin announced today that 2006 Creation Festival Ticket-holders can receive a 20% discount at the gate.

First off, Cornerstone Festival wants to extend our prayers and well wishes to all of the folks who put together Creation Fest each summer. Creation is certainly one of the best run summer festivals and having to cancel at the last minute due to weather is a tragedy for a lot of folks.

Now for all of you Creationites who were looking forward to a week of great music and fellowship, all is not lost. You are invited to join us at Cornerstone Festival Illinois. We are offering a 20% discount to all people who show up at Cornerstone with a valid Creation East 2006 ticket.

That’s right, bring your ticket with you (you can obviously keep it as it is good for Creation Fest 2007), and show it to the folks at the front gate. You will receive a 20% discount.

Our Gates open on Monday, July 3 at 12 noon. The official programming begins on Wed., July 5. But, there is a lot to do on Mon. & Tues. including Tooth and Nail Day, impromptu shows at the various generator stages, sports, swimming, and great fellowship.

We offer open camping so you just come on in and find a camp site that looks good to you. We also offer reserved Youth Group camping but you’ll need to call (309 772 2996) confirming your attendance no later than Friday, June 30 (this is for groups that were originally planning on attending Creation).

Your full event ticket includes 4 nights of camping, Wed. – Sat., July 5 – 8. There is an early camping fee of $10 per person per day, $25 per family per day, or $50 per youth group per day, for Mon & Tues, July 3 & 4.

Creation Festival Postponed One Year

Mount Union, PA (June 26, 2006) Due to the large amounts of rain that have fallen in the past 48 hours and the additional heavy rain fall that is expected this week, Creation 2006 Northeast, scheduled for June 28 July 1, 2006 has been postponed until June 27 June 30, 2007.   This difficult decision has been made after much prayer and consideration.  The Festival Administration, in conjunction with local Emergency Management, has concluded that the grounds are not safe for Creation attendees.

Creation 2006 Northeast tickets will be honored at Creation 2007 Northeast.  Additional information will be posted on www.creationfest.com

We apologize for the inconvenience this will cause those who planned to attend, says Pastor Harry Thomas, Creation Festival Director.  Be assured that this decision has been made for the safety of all attending.  We appreciate your continued prayers for the Creation Festival and its staff and look forward to joining together in 2007.

Blindside touring Europe

The band writes, “We have a lot to catch up on, sorry we haven’t got a lot of emails out to you guys this year. We have been pretty busy and have had a few technical issues with email. But we are back with a BIG update on what we are up to.”

“Our focus for 2006 has been Europe. After spending every summer since 1997 in the USA we decided to stay a little closer to home this year. We have been touring around Sweden which has been amazing. Thanks to everyone who came out to see these shows. Due to the success of this tour we are working on some more dates for the fall !”

School’s out news from Velvet Blue

The long awaited new Other Desert Cities album “on the verge of collapsing” is finally ready to be let out of the bag. It will be available Aug. 1st. 1 track from the album is up at www.myspace.com/velvetbluemusic .

We are also happy to say we’ll be releasing 2 new 7″s from indie darlings The Broadway Hush in August. The band crafts sugary, sweet pop songs like no others. 7″s will be titled “Sun Songs” and “Moon Songs”, artwork will be done by Richard Swift.

Kissing Cousins have been busy lately, shooting a new video, recording EP3, and getting ready to play 2 sets in the disgustingly hot, corn field known as the Cornerstone Festival in Bushnell, IL.

MAP has been getting all kinds of extra attention lately which is well deserved. The band will be out for a week on the east coast with label mate Gary Murray at the end of July so be sure to check them out. NPR will feature the track “Breakfast at Ikea” on the All Songs Considered show, and the track “Rachel Dreams” is being used in the promo trailer for Standing Still, the new Mena Suvari movie. The new MAP ep “San Francisco in the ’90s” is available at www.Towerrecords.com for just $7.49, so get it ! “In a perfect world these young men would already be celebrities” - Babysue

Gary Murray - I think everyone knows the band LN is over, but frontman Gary Murray is not. He’s been busy recording his first solo effort which we hope to have out in Sept./ Oct.

Itunes ? Yep, Pony Express, Map, LN, Kissing Cousins, Calico Sunset all up there now ! Also get songs for $.089 from LN, Map, Kissing Cousins, Calico Sunset, Pony Express, etc at www.buymusic.com or www.mp3-extension.com

RICHARD SWIFT - The Novelist / Walking Without Effort 2 x 12″ w/ bonus cd. - Don’t think anything needs to be said of Swift. This is an amazing release. It’s a co-release with our pals at Secretly Canadian.

KISSING COUSINS - ep2 - Dark, sultry, and lovable. Think Cat Power or PJ Harvey using a slowed down Sonic Youth as the backing band, while playing at a Black Sabbath convention.

MAP - San Francisco in the 90’s - Believe the buzz. New 6 song ep produced by J. Martin. These songs showcase Dooley’s signature, weeping guitar licks, awkward, lonely lyrics, and sing along choruses. The bands finest work to date. Map, map, map.

CALICO SUNSET - Blue Balloon - Electronic based songs with plenty of organic sounds. New ep shows the band being less obsessed with death and being locked in trunks and more obsessed with 60’s pop records and 80’s movies. Jenny’s vocals are so sweet you’ll fall in love with her. + Josh Dooley (map, sf59) plays beautiful guitar lines in these tracks.

RICHARD SWIFT - Foxy Boxing 7″ - 4 Tracks on baby blue vinyl, going fast.

New Lost Dogs Album

We hope this scribbled letter finds you all well. We figured it was about time to gather everyone around the watering hole again to swap notes concerning The Lost Dogs’ tours, albums, recording news, and other odds and ends.

Last summer, the men packed their bags and hit the road for what many fans (as well as the band themselves) said was perhaps the greatest Lost Dogs tour to date. Every night the band was taken aback by incredible audiences, wonderful venues, and tons of laughter. The Dogs had a grand time, night after night, playing their music for so many. Our email boxes filled up with fans thanking the band for their songs and performances.

It’s hard to believe that this summer is already just around the bend. We’re really excited about the next few months - a new album, two tours, and a small fortune of gas in the van. The band keeps kicking around the idea of doing this tour “plugged in” - amps, drum kit, rock and roll. The new album is a return to form (so to speak). You can see a couple of jotted down notes from Mike Roe, Terry Taylor and Derri Daugherty about the new album below.

“On behalf of Terry, Derri, Steve and myself, we cannot wait to see and play for all of you again, especially the songs from our wonderful new album entitled “The Lost Cabin And The Mystery Trees”. These eleven new songs are a gift from us to you — we have never stayed up later or worked harder to bring you our very best. We think you’ll agree with us that this one is terrific — another ‘classic’ along the lines of “Gift Horse” or “Real Men Cry”. Real drums (courtesy of Steve H.) Real bass (from the great Tim Chandler) Loud electric guitars (mine and Derri’s)
Even some loud obnoxious rock and roll (thanks to Terry this time!) Gorgeous melodies and ballads (from all of us). Yes, it’s a winner…” - Mike Roe

“Hindalong told me on the phone the other night that this may be the best record he’s ever participated on. ‘Really?’ I said with a laugh. I was waiting for the punch line. It never came. I think he might be right… at least it’s right up there. I got teary-eyed listening to the rough mixes when I got back home from Nashville - not because it was sad music, (in fact, a couple of tunes are screamingly funny) but because some great friends had come together and created a true thing of beauty. I hope you guys like it. We worked hard to make it happen,
but believe me when I tell you that you’re all worth it.” - Terry Taylor

“I must say it’s one of the best things we’ve ever recorded. Terry’s telling great stories and writing great songs, Steve, Mike and I also wrote great songs for the cd. Mike is singing like an angel, I’m still singing like a girl, Steve is drumming his butt off and keeping us on track. I’ve had a great time making this cd with my closest friends. I hope we keep doing this until we leave this world.” - Derri Daugherty

Visit the Lost Dogs at MySpace.com for an exclusive sample from the new album. You can find the Lost Dogs official MySpace page at the following link:

Listed below are the upcoming tour dates that have been confirmed. We want to bring The Lost Dogs to your area sometime this summer. They’ll be on tour in the Midwest/South/Northeast/Canada from 6.29 (Thr) through 7.23 (Sun).
