Kansas City Film Critics Circle issues top awards

KANSAS CITY, MO. — The 41st annual vote of the Kansas City Film Critics Circle honored work ranging from an account of the 9/11 hijackings to acting portrayals of a British queen and a brutal African dictator.
The 27 voting members of the organization — comprised of print, television, radio and online critics from the Greater Kansas City area — cast ballots in 12 categories on Jan. 2, 2007. Films were eligible if they held advance screenings or opened in the Kansas City area during 2006.
The critics voted the following as the best of 2006:

Best Film: “United 93″

Best Director (renamed the Robert Altman Award for Directing this year): Paul Greengrass, “United 93″

Best Actor: Forest Whitaker, “The Last King of Scotland”

Best Actress: Helen Mirren, “The Queen”

Best Supporting Actor: Michael Sheen, “The Queen”

Best Supporting Actress: Catherine O’Hara, “For Your Consideration”

Best Original Screenplay: Michael Arndt, “Little Miss Sunshine”

Best Adapted Screenplay: William Monahan, “The Departed”

Best Animated Film: “Over the Hedge”

Best Foreign Language Film: “Letters From Iwo Jima”

Best Documentary: “An Inconvenient Truth”

Vince Koehler Award for Outstanding Science Fiction, Fantasy or Horror Film: “Pan’s Labyrinth”

The first movie to win the Kansas City Film Critics Circle award for Best Picture was “Who’s Afraid of Virginia Woolf?” in 1966. The group is the second oldest organization of film critics in the United States.
