Sufjan Stevens is proposing a trade for Christmas

Here’s another innovative musical idea from a man who’s full of them: Sufjan Stevens is proposing a trade. You send him your best original Christmas song, and he’ll return the favor. Yeah, it’s kind of weird.

Basically, the winner of the contest relinquishes all rights to her composition to Sufjan’s Asthmatic Kitty empire. Some prize, eh? But… in exchange, the triumphant songwriter receives an exclusive Christmas song from Sufjan. The winner can keep that song entirely to herself, like some profane secret between her and Sufjan, or share it with friends. The contest began today and ends midnight Dec. 1, so get to composing, dear reader.

Check out the official “Great Sufjan Song Xmas Xchange” website for a free stream of Sufjan’s 2006 Songs for Christmas mega collection, contest details and more awkward photos like the one above.

The Water’s Fine…

Hi, everybody!
We’ve really been busy…lots of fun and exciting stuff to tell you about.
Below, there’s a note from Carolyn detailing an important announcement. Speaking of Carolyn (who else would I be speaking of?), she just took top honors for “Folk/Rock Song of the Year” at the GMA Covenant Awards (yay, Carolyn!). She also co-hosted with comedian Leland Klassen, to rave reviews. (We wouldn’t expect anything less of our Carolyn, now would we? And why am I making all of these parenthetical asides? Ahem. Carry on…)
As with many ardent CA fans, one of my favorite books ever is her self-penned Living the Questions. I am pleased to announce that Harvest House is reissuing it under the title Wrestling with Angels. It includes a new intro and has already received some terrific endorsements:
“This book is a masterpiece album of chapters that will make your heart sing. It will do your heart good by stimulating your mind, your imagination, and your faith.” — Brian McLaren, author/activist (brianmclaren.net)

“Carolyn observes keenly, reflects deeply, and renders it all poetically. Wrestling With Angels is a book I can give to almost anyone with confidence it will speak truth in the inmost places.” — Mark Buchanan, author

“Carolyn is a writer, a terrific writer. God has gifted this woman with a remarkable ability to illustrate ideas that very few writers can illustrate. If you are looking for a friend to take a journey with, this book makes pleasant company.” — Donald Miller, author
Special offer! Pre-order Wrestling with Angels now for only $12 (CDN/US/INT) plus shipping, and we’ll send you an autographed copy the minute the books arrive from the publisher (on or before January 4, 2008. You may order here.
More Carolyn news — she’s been asked to be a columnist for Christianity Today Magazine. Carolyn’s columns will be in every other issue starting in April. We’ll keep you posted!

Danielson and Grammy in the same breath!

from the Sounds Familyre web site:

Grammy?!?
You may be aware that a few months ago, an enormous collaborative project was released called ‘Song of America’. This 50-song, 3-CD set traces the history of America through new versions of culturally significant songs interpreted by contemporary artists, one of which, is our very own Danielson, singing ‘Happy Days Are Here Again’! Also performing are the likes of Andrew Bird, Devendra Banhart, Martha Wainwright, Old Crow Medicine Show, The Black Crowes, etc., etc., etc., (it’s a REALLY long list of very talented people.)

We wanted to let you know that ‘Song of America’ was recently nominated for a Grammy in three categories!:
-Best Contemporary Folk/Americana Album
-Album of the Year
-Production/Non-Classical
How about that? Our Danielson might end up being a Grammy-winner! Who woulda thunk?

November is the perfect month to start an alternative Christian music festival outside Savannah, GA

The Savanna Morning News reports that the First Baptist Church of Rincon, Georgia has its first annual Christian music festival planned for next Saturday. Artists include: Mel Washington Band, IRONY9, The Family, Remidee, This Rock, K.O.S., Church Boi, Ashes of an Empire, Bella, JP Rock, Cheryl Burgess and Arise Awaken.

Guest speakers include Penatello, young adult Sunday school teacher Philip “Pip” Knight and Savannah tattoo parlor owner Dave Oldham.

Festival orginator Steve Penatello is seeking a certain vibe, “”like Woodstock but without the nasty.” The hope is that the event, called the Ingathering, “grows into a Southern rendition of the Cornerstone Festival, an annual music event in central Illinois that draws more than 300 bands and tens of thousands of fans.”

the band Sullivan calls it quits

this is from the band’s myspace, the latest blog:

Sunday, November 11, 2007

RIP Sullivan (2001-2007)
Current mood: crushed

I really wish I didn’t have to type these words, but Sullivan as we know it, is no more. On the evening before the start of what was to be our first headlining tour, the band has decided to call it quits. I am as saddened as the rest of you.

Me and Brooks started Sullivan 6 and a half years ago. We were fortunate enough to eventually be joined by Phil, Tyson and most recently Jeremy. For the past several years these people have been like brothers to me and we all worked together as a family to bring Sullivan to the world. The times we spent could never be considered a waste. They have been some of the best times of my life and I’m sure the others see it the same way.

There have been so many people who have helped us along the way that there is no way to name them all. Countless people who gave something of themselves to us and expected nothing in return. We couldn’t have made it as far as we did without you.

I was constantly amazed by the people who came out to see us play. I want you to know that every time someone came up to me at a show to talk, give me a hug or just ask me to sign something, that it really made me happy. I loved meeting new people, and that’s really the one thing that I’ll miss the most.

Sullivan may be dead for now, but nobody is going away forever. We’ll still be around if you need us. If you never bought Cover your Eyes, go out and get it. I swear it’s good.

This site isn’t dead either, I still have a few more things to get out there before Sullivan closes down shop. So keep coming back for more information.

So we’ll miss you guys. Go out there and support live music, (just make sure you listen to your Sullivan CDs on the way to the show.)

With deepest love

Zach

The Myriad makes top six level of “MTV2 Dew Circuit Breakout” and appreciates your vote.

(NASHVILLE, TENN) November 7, 2007 – In September 2007, MTV2 announced KOCH/ Kosmos’ Seattle based band The Myriad as a top contender for the title of “MTV2 Dew Circuit Breakout.” Chosen out of over 4000 bands in the U.S. to be one of the 12 finalists, The Myriad quickly gained public attention and fan approval. With hundreds of thousands of votes in this week, The Myriad is currently positioned as one of the top six contenders and is headed to the next round of voting to become one of three bands that will play live on-air in New York City.

With top 6 status, The Myriad is also this week’s “heavy hitter,” acquiring the most votes for the week, earning them extra spins during commercial breaks. MTV2 has opened the online voting polls once again, where the public will determine the final three bands. Myriad fans can vote up to 100 times a day from now until November 25 at http://dewcircuitbreakout.mtv2.com/artist/default.aspx?artist=200

The Top 3 Finalists that make the cut will be flown to New York City to perform during the Dew Circuit Breakout Finale, LIVE from Times Square, where the grand prize winner will be announced. The winning band will be thrown back on stage to star in their very first MTV music video for rotation on MTV and MTV2, and will be strongly considered for MTV’s Artist Of The Week. In addition, they’ll grab some air time on Discover & Download and Unleashed, where the latest, most anticipated, most cutting-edge work from the biggest players in rock and hip hop premiere on MTV2.

In addition to their recent success in the Dew Circuit Breakout, the bands video “Product Placement” is currently being aired on MTV2 as their “Video of the Week.” The Myriad filmed the Mountain Dew Party Video on tour from the bus with guys from The David Crowder Band and featured more than 200 Mountain Dew drinks during the video shoot. The song backing the video is “A Thousand Winters Melting” which is The Myriad’s current radio single. The Myriad released their debut EP,
Prelude To Arrows, on October 9.

Currently on a sold-out national tour with The David Crowder Band, The Myriad is made up of Jeremy Edwardson, John Roger Schofield, Steven Tracy, Jonathan Young and Randy Miller.

We still have a few dates to fill for the upcoming Lost Dogs Christmas tour.  We need a few of you who live in the California central valley (Bakersfield, Fresno, Modesto, etc.), central coast (Santa Barbara, San Luis Obispo, Paso Robles, Salinas, Santa Cruz, etc), or San Francisco Bay Area to book the Dogs for this family holiday event. Please help the Dogs
and take the plunge!!!  Time is a wast’in.  Don’t be shy.  If anybody in the San Francisco Bay Area would like to book the Dogs for an early evening concert on Dec 9th, that would be swell.

Probably the biggest project in the works, next fall we are gearing up to unleash The Lost Dogs on a road trip along Route 66.  They will start in Chicago and make their way to the Santa Monica Pier.  This will be no ordinary tour and you will hear more about it as time goes by.  We definitely will need your help to make it happen.  Are you along the route?

Start thinking about how you can participate and possibly book them in your town.  Be a part of this historic event!

If any of you are interested in booking The Lost dogs please contact us. You have no idea how much we rely on you, the fans, for your support in booking and promoting concerts.  We are not in the regular CCM or mainstream loop, so without you, we are nowhere!  Professional promoters are few and far between.  You are the key.  We will do our best to give you
all the promotional helps you need to pull off a show. Believe me when I say, it will be some of the most fun you’ve ever had!
