Sheesh…so much Danielson goodness

Dear Familyre Friends!

We are pleased to mark the beginning of a season in which we look back upon and celebrate some of our favorite Danielson titles from a rich back catalog that has spanned over a decade. This epic journey of retrospection begins with the vinyl reissues of …

Tell Another Joke At The
Ol’ Choppin’ Block

and…

Fetch The Compass Kids
(both of these titles are being released on
Secretly Canadian)

AND…

Tri-Danielson!!!
(Alpha/Omega)
(being released on Sounds Familyre)

In addition to being back in print for the first time since 2001, these reissues have some unique attributes. Tell Another Joke At The Ol’ Choppin’ Block is now available as a 2×12″ LP format (as opposed to the 2×10″ format in which it debuted) and includes four bonus songs from a live WFMU session from 1996. Tri Danielson!!! (Alpha/Omega) has been partially remixed, fully remastered, and makes its vinyl return dressed up in a brilliant new gatefold jacket along with a very special bonus track.

These reissues, along with lots of other wonderful goodies to be rolled out out over the next month and a half (brand new videos, unreleased mp3s from live shows, radio sessions, and much much more), will culminate November 4th (December 1st in the UK) with the release of…

Trying Hartz (First Fruits ‘94-’04), a two-disc retrospective of the first ten years of Danielson’s body of work. Aside from fan favorite album tracks, it includes previously difficult-to-find songs, alternate takes, new intros & outros, and a few very choice live recordings!

Believe it or not, that’s not all! Secretly Canadian is now offering a BRAND NEW, TOTALLY FREE EP from Danielson called Danielson ALIVE!!

To continue the celebration EVEN FURTHER, the first domestic Danielson tour in over two years will happen in November (starting Halloween night at the Knitting Factory in NYC). See details below, and then click here to start celebrating!

Sheesh…so much Danielson goodness. But that’s it for now. We don’t to overload anyone’s system.

Urban Hillbilly Quartet’s Erik Brandt releases outtake from upcoming album

While living in Hungary, Erik recorded a new album (probably will be out in December–more on that soon). One of the tunes had an alternate take worth releasing–The Ballad of Janos Sinko.
Composer and violinist, Matt Gosden of the UK added horn and string parts to this tune about Erik’s great-grandfather.

You can listen to it and download it for free at the myspace page now
www.myspace.com/erikanduhq

Another version of this same song will appear on the new album, alongside 9 other new original songs.

ALSO:
A handful of upcoming gigs are posted on the UHQ website now–Erik solo, UHQ & Beguine Bros shows…

“There are no spectators at Cornerstone” Fest director recaps 08 & previews 09

Cornerstone 2009 Logo

The State Of The Union
I want to start by thanking each of you who participated in Cornerstone this summer. From the feedback I have been receiving and my own experience, this was one of the best fests yet. Now I use the word “participated,” for truly Cornerstone is made of all who were there. There are no spectators at Cornerstone. Each of us traveled to the campgrounds, found our choice camping spot, figured out our living arrangements for the week, decided on which seminars and concerts to attend. Some joined into the games. And most importantly, all of us helped create this wonderful little community that almost magically appears each summer. We met old friends and established new relationships.

Our 25th. It almost seems impossible that it has been that long and yet I can hardly recall a summer without Cornerstone. I have watched my 3 children grow up at Cornerstone. It has played a significant part in their spiritual journeys. Today they are all married and this year I had the pleasure of being joined by my 3 grandkids. I can hardly wait to see what part Cornerstone will play in their lives.

You see Cornerstone is a place where each of us has the opportunity to grow in our understanding of what it means to share in this amazing grace we have been offered, to see God’s love in action, to be Christ followers. It is also a time of patience as many who attend are seekers. Whereas to some of us the answer is so obvious and we can hardly believe others can’t see it, we also welcome those who join us each summer who are still looking. Especially the teenagers and young adults who are beginning to question what they have been taught. They may need more time. Often they are longing to see this faith in action. What a grand responsibility to be able to model Christ’s love for them.

I addressed this editorial “The State of the Union” as I wanted to bring you deeper into the inner circle. I want each of you to understand more about Cornerstone and how it all comes together.

Cornerstone is a non-profit event. The entire staff is volunteer. Even I, the full time director, do not take a salary from Cornerstone. I and the year round staff are all urban missionaries supported by our local church and outside sources. Each and every dime that comes into the fest goes right to the bottom line. Most of your ticket revenue goes toward the programming each year. The speakers, the artists, and the overall production. But there is also a year round expense I want you to be aware of.

I am not sure what Cornerstone would look like today without that incredible 600+ acre campground we call Cornerstone Farm. What a blessing to able to gather each summer at this place. And yet it is also comes with a hefty price tag. We enjoy over 5 miles of internal roads. The campground has over 200 water spigots spread out along several miles of underground plumbing fed by our own deep water well and pump system. There are extensive electrical services spread out over the property. We have 5 ponds and a 125 acre lake with a massive dam and spillway and miles of fencing. I share all of this as I want you to understand where your ticket money and contributions go. Again, there are no salaried employees. We, just like so many of you each summer, are volunteers.

We have tried hard to keep ticket prices affordable and will continue to do so. We also face the challenge of rising costs. I covet your prayers. We need God’s wisdom and guidance as we plan for next summer. I want Cornerstone 2009 to be a spectacle to behold and yet affordable. Tickets for next summer are already available. I realize it is asking a lot to expect anyone to purchase their tickets so early but this is one important way you can contribute to the year round budget. These early ticket sales are vital pieces to the puzzle. I want to thank each of you who have already made the commitment and encourage all of you who can afford it to please purchase your ’09 tickets as soon as you can.

The new 2009 website will be up around Nov. 1. In the meantime there are over 1000 photos and over 60 video clips from this year online for you to enjoy. We will be running several contests over the next few months and invite you to participate. We also love to hear from you and encourage everyone to vote on what bands they want to see in ‘09.

So thanks of taking the time to read this. I want to again thank each of you for the privilege of letting me direct this festival as it is only through your prayers and continued participation all of this is possible. And as you know, Cornerstone is an enormous joint effort that relies on thousands of hours of volunteer service from so many of you.

From one Christ follower to another.
Thanks,
John Herrin
Cornerstone Festival director

Ping’s Jeff Elbel checks in.

Ping/Marathon Records Logo

http://www.marathonrecords.com

If you haven’t visited the Ping website for a while, have a look. It’s still not flashy, but I have updated the Audio page with a Snocap player to hear and download clips from The Eleventh Hour Storybook. There’s new content elsewhere around the site, too. I like the photo Shawn Pierce took at Cornerstone 2008; John and I are doing the double-solo on “Bark Along with Cody,” like a calypso version of the Allman Brothers. Or something.

Thanks for supporting independent music!

Call + Response confronts slave trade with movie opening October 16

CALL+RESPONSE is a first of its kind feature documentary film that reveals the world’s 27 million dirtiest secrets: there are more slaves today than ever before in human history. CALL+RESPONSE goes deep undercover where slavery is thriving from the child brothels of Cambodia to the slave brick kilns of rural India to reveal that in 2007, Slave Traders made more money than Google, Nike and Starbucks combined.

Luminaries on the issue such as Cornel West, Madeleine Albright, Daryl Hannah, Julia Ormond, Ashley Judd, Nicholas Kristof, and many other prominent political and cultural figures offer first hand account of this 21st century trade. Performances from Grammy-winning and critically acclaimed artists including Moby, Natasha Bedingfield, Cold War Kids, Matisyahu, Imogen Heap, Talib Kweli, Five For Fighting, Switchfoot, members of Nickel Creek and Tom Petty’s Heartbreakers, Rocco Deluca move this chilling information into inspiration for stopping it.

Music is part of the movement against human slavery. Dr. Cornel West connects the music of the American slave fields to the popular music we listen to today, and offers this connection as a rallying cry for the modern abolitionist movement currently brewing.

Fireproof opens in September 26 nationwide.

Fireproof the Movie

Shorewood Church & Shorewood Pictures of Albany, Georgia, are at it again:

At work inside burning buildings, Capt. Caleb Holt lives by the firefighter’s adage to never leave your partner behind. At home, in the cooling embers of his marriage, he lives by his own rules. Now Holt is about to face his toughest job ever: rescuing his wife’s heart. “Fireproof” is a realistic picture of the love, hope, hard work, and faith that strong marriages require—a story that says with commitment to God even the toughest marriages can withstand life’s inevitable fires.

Fireproof the Movie Dot Com has a handy list of theaters nationwide.

Leeland’s home town suffers in aftermath of Hurricane Ike

September 16, 2008

Hurricane Ike Update

We can’t thank you all enough for praying during this terrible time. Through comments on our blog, we know that hundreds of you are.

Baytown, Texas, on the east side of Houston, is our hometown. The entire area is currently without power. We have countless family and friends who will be without work for weeks to come. The financial toll that a disaster like Hurricane Ike leaves is unbelievable.

Somehow, the homes of all of us in Leeland are completely fine (as are we), but our home-church sustained significant damage. There is standing water in the sanctuary. The roof/ceiling leaked tremendously and lots of ceiling tiles caved in. We will be unable to have services at the church building for at least five weeks and the building will need major repairs.

We ask for your continued prayers during this difficult time.

Thanks for the love. God bless each of you.

Leeland, Jack, Jake, Mike and Matt (Leeland)
