Who: Matt Shumway, a Carmel High School graduate and professional animator who worked on the new film “The Chronicles of Narnia.”
Age: 27.
What: The next George Lucas. Shumway was an animator on “The Chronicles of Narnia: The Lion, the Witch and the Wardrobe,” C.S. Lewis’ Christian allegory about a magnificent, selfless lion named Aslan, now playing in movie theaters. Shumway and his brother, Jason, an editor on “E! True Hollywood Story,” also wrote, produced and directed a live-action sci-fi film, “Enigma,” that’s currently in post-production.
As an animator with the company Rhythm & Hues, Shumway “drew” Aslan, yet “drawing” may be a misnomer, he reports. Hand-drawn animation is virtually dead, he says. It’s all computer-generated graphics, or “3D,” these days, says Shumway, who trained at the Savannah College of Art and Design and the Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, Calif.
What’s the difference between “3D” animation and “2D,” or two-dimensional, which is the industry term for traditional hand-drawn animation?
“What you have is what you get in 3D. The arm can only be so long. In 2D, if you need a longer arm, you just draw it a lot quicker.”
